  • Good place to sit and relax. However it is too cold during winter and waves and currents are too high. Good for surfing

  • Absolutely beautiful black sand beach, and one of our favorite beaches in New Zealand! Wide beaches with lots of sand and waves, and very popular with surfers. It can get crowded here on weekends and holidays, so be prepared! The beach itself is huge and you will have plenty of space to stretch out and relax no matter what weekend you visit, but the limited parking is the problem. You may have to park a little distance away from the main beaches, and walk 10 minutes or so when it is busy. Some suggestions: Wear beach shoes or sandals (NZ terminology- jandals!) - the black sand gets really hot in the sunshine and will burn your bare feet Take a beach blanket or large beach towels- again... hot sand! Fill up with gas before going... no gas stations out here in Piha! There are some small cafes and a small store near the beach for snacks and basics, but if you plan to stay a few days, take supplies. The grocery items and carry out food is higher priced and there are limited options. There is nowhere to buy beer, wine, or liquor in Piha, so BYOB The water is rough at times, and swimming areas with lifeguards are restricted. Be sure to watch your kids and be careful There is a campground near the beach, but other lodging is limited. Look online before going out to Piha if you plan to stay overnight. There are some really beautiful sunsets on clear or partly clear evenings here. It is a popular place to relax and have a “dinner picnic” for the views. Be sure to walk south along the beach from the southern part of the beach at low tide to see the Gap, and to swim and relax in the Blue Pool! Also... Be sure to walk up the walkway to get to the viewpoint on Lions Rock when you are there. It takes about 10 minutes to walk up to the viewpoint and the panoramic views are amazing! The stairs and trail are easiest to access from the northern part of Piha Beach. Just go and have fun! No
